Poetry: Letter By A Soldier By: Lateef Olalekan

I am a soldier stigmatized with wardom.
A soldier whose priority is to fight for freedom.
A soldier whose life isn't an obstacle,
but to protect the territorial integrity is the spectacle.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Once upon a time on the battle field.
A day when my heart was sorrow filled.
A dare friend fell leaving behind his family and nation.
I was full of tears but "no room for emotion"
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Everyone has the right to life but mine is sitting on the fence.
A brave soldier whose aim is "defence".
In a deep forest where i built my mansion,
living a wild life with deadly animals as my companions.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

No mother ever reared a braver soldier.
Hardly do i hear that beautiful voice of my mother.
No father ever scolded a braver soldier.
The worst taunt always comes from the field brigadier.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Soldier never dies but falls in a deep sleep.
When i fall in such sleep, tell my wife not to weep.
For my mother, tell her she conceded an icon.
An icon who was ready to die for his nation.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Either i return flying high the national flag,
or i return wrapped up with the flag like a cat wrapped in the bag.
Being a soldier has left me with those two fates.
But tell my family never to expect me in a precise date,
For i am a soldier, i am born to be a "late"
