59 years down the lane, you are still stuck in the mud. Since your independence, you were never stagnant.
But you have retrogressed in an unprecedented fashion.
Prior to October 1960, you were befitting of the giant tag. Then, if anything was a barrier to your self actualization, it was the unwelcomed presence of the British Imperial masters. Because the world was convinced of your readiness for self governance. If only for the caliber of intellectuals that you paraded, which made you command a reputable international recognition.
Truly, no doubts, the world could not wait for the explosion of ideas and the synergy of resources for not just the common good of your children and the unborn generations, plus the betterment of the African region too, but also your capacity to change the world.
Your first celebrated set of children did portray your strength. Zik, Balewa, Awo and the rest of them all shunned every manner of differences, from ethnic to religion. This ideal of unity was borne out of patriotism to their fertile mother.
Nigeria is blessed!
And nobody can dispute the fact. We are the most populous black Nation of the world, not just that the demographic figures are impressive, we equally boast of a youthful majority with talents and zeal. We have a large land mass which is arable and rich in minerals. Just with a half of the aforementioned, one will expect a smart city. Alas! It is a sorry case.
Therefore in order to chart a new course for practical development and growth, we need to pay much more attention to the modus operandi of governance. Corruption crusade can not be successful with mere lip service or witch hunt, we need to be more serious. The executive and the legislative arms must not compromise but cooperate, while the independence of the judiciary must always be respected.
Likewise, democracy must be allowed to thrive. Franchise of citizens must be protected, and the freedom of press must never be tampered with.
Government should prioritize the welfarism of Nigerians in the diaspora, while the citizens at home should never lack the true dividends of democracy.
Government must invest on infrastructures and education. Provide security from poverty and diseases, also for lives and properties. Human rights must be respected and protected, and policies must be put in place to help the climate. The followers however, each of us must be our brother's keeper, be conscious about the polity and be wise. Then assist the government projects.
I am convinced that if our government stayed true to these commitments rather than playing politics of bitterness, and the citizens too, rather than play blame games, risen to full responsibilities, we will achieve a better Nigeria for all and sundry.
Happy 59th independence to our mother Nigeria.🇳🇬
