The head is undoubtedly the most important part of the body as it bears four (4) sense organs out of five(5). The eyes, the ears, the nose, and tongue. And even with the skin covering the skull, the 5th sense organ is equally well represented. Little wonder why the whole wide world pays a critical attention to this important feature.
Many efforts have/are drained/draining in a bid to honor the head with the most fashionable and decorated cotton. From cap, bonnet, headgear, to hats and hoods. But it most appears like in the women's world, fashion is a way of life.
Having said that, I will explore the African texture of head tie and the pleasure with it.
The "Gele"
A well tied "gele" is a pure evidence of grandiosity. Because it always gloomingly sits on the head of the bearer just like a well crafted crown. Though it is one thing to own a beautiful gele, it is actually fascinating that one understands its trajectory of fashion, then the uniqueness it brings after adornment.
In many places, the gele fabrics is always a regalia. How much more way could African fashion have stand out?
While it astonishingly catches the attention of all and sundry, the glory of elegance shall shine.
Although all over the world, our identity has consistently battled with some satanic forces of cultural intimidation which is as a result of physical and mental colonization. Oftentimes, an average African lacks the will to exhibit the giant continental ideas, because the will to defend his system of living is still an oxygen waiting to be used.
However, if anything would make a major difference on the global space, it is peculiar difference. This implies that our uniqueness as a people lies in a solid, uncompromising and unapologetic spirit of patriotism to the mother Africa.
African fashion materials such as the 'gele' must begin to compete at the global market functions, while Africa gives foreign patronage a befitting burial. This will further open our market for large local production and international industrial exploit.
The 'gele' is a perfect example of an African style, more to the duties of good hands. To be worn not just to 'gala nights' but also the solemn environments. It then depends on the pattern of tying, to depict a story.
"In Nigeria, 'gele' is the traditional name for head tie. And it is an ornament to behold. It is also necessary to draw the picture of an African fashion sense. That rather than just covering the head, why don't you just wear a crown?"
It is clear that beauty steadily treads the African soil. Of course, our exports are major testimonies. Henceforth, let our 'gele' rule the world.
