When poverty comes to mind, it triggers the thought of misfortunes. Because poverty is synonymous to unfortunateness. Although, to many, poverty has been restrictedly conceptualized to just fiscal deficit. While others, especially the critical thinkers, are of the opinion that the concept of poverty is like a wild fire which spreads and burn all grasses, even the greenest of them. Thus, poverty is a multifacet cankerworm that destroys all timbers of hope. Therefore when there is a somewhat discernment of any level of lowness in literacy, it is called mental poverty. The same manner that income deficiency can be referred to as financial poverty, an indisciplined society is also said to be suffering from a moral poverty. In other words, poverty is just a concept which encapsulates all sort of explosives that is capable of causing havoc either in the life of an individual or in the lives of a group, nation. However, in contrast to the general belief that poverty is a menace which is bound to render it's victims weak and incapacitated, I feel it is only serving the role of a detractor. Therefore, rather than perceiving poverty as a barrier to greatness, it should be seen as a bridge to success. The distractions which poverty brings in the face of the poor is meant to limit their thinking capacity, and of course subject them to ridicule which will negate them, and exchange their goodness for badness, and patience for desperacy. That is the trick! For instance, when one is financially poor, he automatically loses access to good life. But that period however throws him in between two ladders, with one looking strong and firm while the other, weak and unsteady. The former represents his current reality while the latter stands for hope. Whereas, behind reality is limits, doubts and aspersions while behind hope is prosperity, prosperity and prosperity. The structures of the ladders are represented in such manner, in order to epitomize a simple illustration of life ; That the reality (today) is correct and certain while hope (tommorow) is not. So ordinarily, what many unconsciously do is to remain with the firm and strong ladder, then shun the unsteady one. The implication is that they fail to take risk, and they continue to soar in poverty. I believe prosperity lies not just in hard-work but courage and resilience. For a place of comfort, is a zone for poor dwellers. The psychology of poverty that many of us have is more responsible for our current status. Every other thing to me, is secondary. If you can't push yourself to greatness, no one will. If you didn't stand up for recognition, nobody will notice you. And if you failed to take risk in life, "average" is your birthright. My dear reader, rise up now or never ! ✍ Abubakar Damilare (MAIYAKI)*

The President, African Statistical Association, Prof. Dahud Shangodoyin, has said Nigeria’s dwindling economy led to loss of more jobs and an increase in unemployment rate to 23.1 per cent in June.
He noted and regretted that only 26 per cent of the 10 million applicants secured admissions into tertiary institutions between 2010 and 2015, with another 10.5 million children out of school, the largest globally.
Shangodoyin said the only way to resolve the impact of population explosion on sustainable development was to have developmental planning revolution in Nigeria.
“We must recognise major trends and issues in Nigeria’s population dynamics. To do this, we must conduct our long overdue national population and housing census. Some trends and issues (such as reduction of infant mortality, family planning, changes to immigration policies, contraception and many others) that have direct impact on the resources on which human life depends (lands, water and biodiversity) should be addressed.
As Allah saved Ismail from death & replaced him with a sacrificial ram. May He save us too from the tribulations of this world and grant us eternal stay in Al-Jannah. Eid Mubarak pic.twitter.com/KkSuCt2HAg
