SHORT STORIES: GOLD OR CRUDEOIL? (Wúrà Tàbí Épó Rọ̀bì?) By: Lawal Sultan

PREFACE
It takes more than just giving birth to a child to become a parent, it's indeed a wrong assumption that due to the advancement of technology, parental responsibilities can be shelved aside, rather parenting should be at its climax due to the side effects of wards been exposed to such technologies. It's a recent trend parents now appear to their wards like every other person or like mere housemates or just co-inhabitants of same house. One has begin to fail as a parent if your wards would rather keep their problems to themselves than to share with them this is as a result of parents not devoting time to their wards and also overblowing the little stuffs their wards share with them.

Episode 1

One Sunday afternoon after church a family of five (Dad, Mum, Ola, Bolaji & Oyinda) embarked on a planned outing, the eldest child requested to go home because her legs hurts due to her tight shoe, the mother suggested they drive home, everyone take a rest, change their clothes and go out later in the day. The traffic might get congested later in the day and besides one might be too tired to come out later protested Ola. I will join you shortly I can go change my shoe with a bike, be careful said the mother and don't stay long. The other members of the family proceeded to the eatery and sat on a table of 5 chairs keeping a seat for Ola, after about 30minutes without the sight of Ola they started bombarding her phones with calls but all to no response. Maybe she didn't take her phone with her it might probably be in the car said Bolaji.

Let's head home said the father as he grabs the car keys from the table, in the car he lamented about the conduct of Ola and how he has squeezed time out from his busy schedule to fix the outing and how she made it short-lived with her absence, on getting home Ola was met dead in a pool of blood which was something shocking to everyone, her parents called the cops and ambulance. Investigation had commence immediately, sorry for the loss we'll be back by tomorrow when everything is calm to inquire useful information, please accept our condolences said the officers and the ambulance packed her dead body away.

On the following day people had gathered in the house to sympathize with the family as tears flowed like river from all angles of the house as countless number of people were present ranging from family, friends, colleagues and Ola's boyfriend (Dami). The police started their interrogation by inquiring what happened, as the head of the house I know you should understand your utmost cooperation at this time is very crucial in unraveling this mystery said the officer as he moved closer to Ola's Dad, he narrated their ordeal from the church to the eatery and back home and one strange thing is that up till the moment her phone is yet to be found and it's now switched off, is that all? asked the officer, yes Ola's Dad replied in a bitter mode. I don't think she came home because of her shoe.... Ola's friend (Ashabi) cuts in, I think  ....someone called her to. This left everyone in shock, i had received a call on my phone as the caller asked to speak to Ola because she hasn't been picking her calls, she went out of the church to talk to the person and came back to seat beside me moody, the person then called back, she bend her head abit to pick in the church "I've heard, i will come." She shouted Let me have your phone the officer said to Ashabi who replied that she was charging it at home, let me pick it, I'll be back shortly she said, join us at the station instead said the officer as the cops also take their leave. Few minutes later a call came through that Ashabi was involved in a ghastly accident in the second street to the police station and one paculiarity with Ola's death is that Ashabi's phone too can't be found at the scene, can this be  a coincidence?, Probably her phone was stolen by one of the passerby, only time will tell.

In the cause of further investigations the police stated that there's more to the deaths of the duo than meet the eyes, further inquiries were made about Ola's person since her parents has gotten over the shock a bit, she's a secretive person but she's always with her diary and also addicted to her phone and other gadgets said her parents, the police requested for the said diary and on checking the diary at a glance they can only find things that relates to surprises, relationships, and outings with the exception of few pages which are written in codes and one of the coded piece is the last note which reads "DISAPPOINTED BEYOND BOUNS (the headline). In the thief of gold a big masquerade is involved he goes by the name R.A-G.I.D."
